Custom Products:

What standards can you design to?

We have the ability to design for CE, UL, TUV, MIL-STD, or any other EIA-310-D variations. When the product is ready for testing, we will refer you to one of our partners (such as NTS) or gladly act as a liaison if you wish.
How long does a project take from start to
  finish?
This will of course depend on the complexity of the project, but typically a design period is 2-6 weeks, with an additional 2-4 weeks for a prototype and 4-5 weeks for production.
How can you not charge design fees on custom
  projects in quantity?
This is achieved through our focus of long-term business with our customers. Our engineers are paid a salary that is funded through sustained production runs over time. This unique approach rewards our ongoing customers with the incentive of no up front design cost as well as the ability to make design changes along the way at no extra charge. Additionally, we stay aggressively competitive through the element of DFM (Design for Manufacturability), where we design our products as efficiently as possible from the manufacturing standpoint as to keep internal cost at a minimum. Finally, we are able to cut down on our design man hours by borrowing from existing designs, thereby eliminating any redundancy that usually occurs in the design process.
What quantity is required to waive the design
  fees?
As with timeline, this will depend on the complexity of the product. However, we are usually able to waive design fees with an initial, single order in the neighborhood of 50 units.
What is the design fee for smaller quantity
  custom projects?
Design fees typically range from $2,000-$4,000 on smaller projects, depending on the complexity. Stricter standards such as NEBS or MIL-STD will cost more, and any design fees can be credited back on an eventual large order. In this sense, design fees can be thought of as more of a deposit.
Who owns the rights to the design packages?

Since we charge little to nothing for design and borrow from our proprietary plan sets throughout the design process, we maintain all rights to any drawings we produce. With this stated, we promise to always be:

 - Extremely competitive with production cost, offering tiers for higher quantities in a single order.

 - Timely, staying close to any timeline estimates and not incurring any unnecessary delays.

 - Of the highest caliber of quality, a standard by which we have made ourselves known.

If purchase of the drawing package is required, pricing for the entire plan set will be determined on a subjective basis.

Do you integrate? We stick to what we do best – enclosures. If a turnkey solution is what you require, we are able to work with one of our partners for any integration or let you work directly with them yourself. This being said, we can of course make recommendations on which components (including motherboards and backplanes) would suit your needs best in any given application.
Is there any limit to how many units can be
  produced?
Not at all. We have the capacity to go into the thousands per order, and can make offshore production possible in extremely large orders if desired.
What is the process to start a custom project? Please start with the Custom Configuration Form. From there, we can work together to hone down the look and feel, both through example as well as concept drawings. An up front payment is required before the design process can begin. Please refer to our Policy area for more payment information. Once an up front payment - the design fee or initial production cost depending on the size of the project - is received, we request that any internal components are shipped to us to aid in design.
